PKP Intercity said it received two offers for the contract, including one from a consortium of Pesa Bydgoszcz and ZNTK Mińsk Mazowiecki and the offer from Stadler. The operator planned to allocate Zlotys 1.025bn ($US 270m) for the purchase, with Stadler’s offer amounting to Zlotys 1.015bn.

The 160km/h EMUs will be equipped with ETCS, CCTV, air-conditioning, electric sockets, Wi-Fi and mobile signal amplifiers, with space for transporting bicycles. The vehicles can seat 60 passengers in first class and 294 passengers in second class.

Passengers will also be able to purchase hot and cold food and drinks at-seat or in the catering area. The vehicles will be designed to assist passengers with reduced mobility, featuring wheelchair lifts and toilets with baby changing tables.

The delivery of the first two EMUs will take place within 18 months from the start of the contract, with the vehicles then undergoing six to 12 months of testing in service before the next units are delivered, which must be within 48 months of the start of the contract.

The new trains are expected to be used on the Szczecin - Lublin, Szczecin - Kraków and Kraków - Lublin routes, which will allow the use of existing rolling stock on the Gdynia - Łódź - Kraków/Przemyśl and Kraków - Warszawa - Olsztyn routes.

The new vehicles will supplement PKP Intercity’s fleet of 20 Flirts which have been in operation in Poland since December 2015.

The contract is subject to a 10-day objection period.

PKP Intercity announced in October 2016 that it would invest Zlotys 2.5bn ($US 660m) over four years in the continued modernisation of its locomotive and rolling stock fleets.
