SPANISH national operator Renfe and Stadler have signed a €998m contract for the supply of 59 high-capacity trains for Cercanías commuter services.
Stadler and Alstom were awarded contracts worth a combined €2.445bn to manufacture 211 140km/h trains in March.
Under the contract signed on July 15 by Renfe president, Mr Isaías Táboas, and Stadler president, Mr Iñigo Parra, Stadler will supply 24 100m-long EMUs and 35 200m-long EMUs. The fleet will be manufactured at its facilities in Albuixech, Valencia, generating around 500 direct jobs, and Stadler will also provide maintenance and spare parts for 15 years.
The new trains will have 900 seats, providing around 20% more capacity than the existing fleet, and will minimise passenger boarding and alighting times with 10 doors and large vestibules. The trains will be designed for passengers with reduced mobility, with spaces for bicycles and pushchairs, and will be equipped with Wi-Fi.
The fleet is part of the renewal of 50% of the Cercanías and Medium Distance fleets, and will be more reliable and energy efficient than the legacy vehicles.
