ROMANIA’s Railway Reform Agency (ARF) has once again selected Pesa as its supplier for a major contract, the second won by the Polish rolling stock manufacturer in two months.

This second ARF contract comprises 62 Regio RE-R EMUs for regional services, worth Zlotys 3bn ($US 730m), adding to the Romanian agency’s September order of 20 three-car EMUs for Zlotys 1.2bn from Pesa. The 62 trains will be used for passenger services on 10 regional lines within the Bucharest, Cluj, and Iasi regions.

Welcoming the decision, Pesa’s president Mr Krzysztof Zdziarski says that the orders “are an important step” in the company’s expansion outside Poland.

The contract also covers maintenance and service over 15 years, with an option of another 15-year extension, and will include the construction of three new maintenance facilities, the details of which have yet to be disclosed.

However, Alstom, which lost out to Pesa for the second consecutive time, has appealed against the decision, and a verdict on the matter is expected later this year.

Meanwhile, Pesa is already aiming for further Romanian tenders, to supply light rail vehicles for the cities of Bucharest, Galati, Iasi, Oradea, and Ploesti.
