SLOVENIAN Railways (SŽ) introduced its new fleet of Stadler Kiss double-deck EMUs into passenger service on January 14.

SŽ awarded Stadler a €169m contract for 11 four-car Flirt single-deck EMUs, five three-car Flirt DMUs, and 10 three-car Kiss EMUs in April 2018. An option for a further 16 three-car Flirt DMUs and 10 four-car Flirt EMUs was exercised in May 2019. All 52 trains on order from Stadler are due to be delivered by the end of 2022.

The 79.8m-long Kiss EMUs will primarily be used on Ljubljana - Dobova and Ljubljana - Jesenice regional services. Each train seats 292 passengers including 16 in first class, with two wheelchair spaces. There is space for 10 bicycles across two multi-functional areas in the driving cars.

The 3kV dc EMUs have a maximum speed of 160 km/h.
