TRENITALIA has selected a consortium of Škoda Group and Titagarh Firema to supply up to 370 new sleeping cars under a €732.5m framework contract.

The first part of the contract, worth €138.6m, comprises the delivery of 70 sleeping cars. This will consist of 40 Comfort coaches, 22 DeLuxe and four Economy vehicles. The new rolling stock will be deployed on the Milan - Palermo/Syracuse line.

The DeLuxe vehicles each offer six single and two double bedrooms, which are described as comfortable and spacious, with each having their own toilet and shower. The coaches are also equipped with air-conditioning and modern information and audio-video infotainment systems.

The DeLuxe vehicle features six single and two double bedrooms.

The Comfort coaches each feature seven compartments fitted with four beds and a washbasin. Each compartment is equipped with air-conditioning. The coaches have larger areas to accommodate people with reduced mobility including accessible toilets.

The Economy coaches offer a 2+1 seating arrangement, with dividing walls between sections aiding passenger comfort. Passengers will also benefit from armrests, oversized headrests and individual lighting at each seat. The vestibule area will feature luggage racks and a toilet.

Manufacturing of the coaches will take place at Titagarh Firema’s plant in Caserta, Campania. The procurement is supported by funding from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

“I am really pleased that the production of the new coaches will take place in Italy, at a historic site of rolling stock manufacture, because of the positive impact on employment levels,” says Mr Carlo Logli, CEO of Titargarh Firema. “I would therefore like to thank Škoda for this unprecedented partnership, which we hope will be the first of many more fruitful collaborations in the future.”
