European rail freight and intermodal operators will be able to apply for a grant to switch freight from road to rail along the corridor between Brenner on the Austrian border via Bolzano to Salorno north of Trento. The fund will run until the end of 2021.

The objective is to reduce pollution in the corridor, but in the long term Alto Adige wants to coordinate traffic management along the Brenner route with other Alpine authorities such as the Austrian state of Tirol, the German state of Bavaria and the neighbouring Italian region of Trento.

Measures being considered include new intermodal freight terminals and loading stations for RoLa piggyback services to transport lorries and their drivers along the corridor.

Applications for grants to be issued in 2020 must be submitted by November 30.
