The line has been selected for the trial following requests from residents who have asked the government to explore innovative solutions to rail-borne noise.

The Ministry of Infrastructure says it has agreed the trial with freight operators alongside several measures which will benefit rail freight.

Tests will be carried out at speeds as low as 40km/h and are likely to take place between 23.00 and 07.00.

In addition to measuring noise and vibration, the trials will be used to evaluate the impact on ProRail’s operations and systems.

If the trial is successful, the Dutch government will consider reducing freight train speeds elsewhere on the network.
