AUSTRIAN Federal Railways (ÖBB) subsidiary Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has established a new subsidiary, Rail Cargo Carrier-Southeast, which is registered as a freight operator in Serbia.

Rail Cargo Carrier-Southeast will primarily carry transit freight from Turkey and Greece through to central and southeast Europe, as well as serving the Serbian market.

RCG is aiming to strengthen its position in Turkey, where it says further development of sustainable logistics has enormous potential as international traffic is at present strongly dependent on road transport to reach destination in Europe. Rail has a 1% market share of freight travelling between Turkey and Europe, with RCG looking to increase this.

Serbian shippers will also benefit from joining RGC’s TransNet network, and the new route via Serbia provides RCG with a second corridor between central Europe and Turkey alongside the existing route via Romania.
