Work began in 2010 and the project has increased the maximum train length to 750m, while the maximum axleload has been increased to 25 tonnes. The number of level crossings has been reduced and a passing loop has been built at Mobodarne. The loading gauge has also been increased to SE-C (equivalent to UIC GC gauge), raising the maximum width for freight wagons to 3.60m and height to 4.83m.

The project included the construction of a new connection to the East Coast Line at Söderhamn which enables trains from Umeå and Sundsvall travelling towards Hallsberg, Gothenburg and Malmö to access the Kilafors line without reversal.
