Born in 1948, Kallas studied economics and in 1991 became president of the Estonian Central Bank. He served as minister of the exterior and finance minister between 1994 and 1995, before becoming prime minister in 2002. Two years later he moved to the EC where he was responsible for economic matters.
EC names new transport commissioner
ESTONIAN Dr Simm Kallas has been named as the new European Union (EU) transport commissioner, replacing Mr Antonio Tajani. Kallas also retains his position as vice-president of the European Commission (EC).
