CONSTRUCTION officially started on China’s newest high-speed line, the link between Zhangzou and Shantou on February 4.
The 176km line is costed at Yuan 40.1bn ($US 5.64bn) and is due to be completed in the second half of 2028.
The line is an important part of the country’s ‘eight by eight’ grid of high-speed rail corridors. It will link the Shantou - Guangzhou and Fuzhou - Xiamen - Zhangzhou high-speed lines. These routes, together with the Wenfu - Fuzhou and Ningbo - Wenzhou high-speed lines, will form a 350km/h rail corridor along China’s southeastern coast.
The new line, linking Fujian and Guangdong provinces, includes a total of seven stations. Zhangzhou, Zhangpu and two stations in Shantou are existing interchanges, while Dongshan County, Zhao'an South and Raoping South are new.
