The contracts cover the period up 2024 (Control Period 6), while the options would extend the contracts up to 2026 covering the first two years of Control Period 7.
The framework contracts, which came into effect on January 31, are divided into five geographical areas. Alstom will be responsible for NR’s Southern and Eastern regions, Siemens will take care of the Scotland and North West & Central regions, and a joint venture between Hitachi Rail STS and Linbrooke Services will cover the Wales & Western region.
“The major signalling frameworks are the final awards in a three-tier approach to signalling delivery for Control Period 6,” says Mr Paul Wright, NR’s commercial director.
NR says it wants to save £3.5bn during CP6 as part of an efficiency drive which includes exploring new technologies to accelerate work, streamlining processes and investigating innovative ways of working.
