Network Rail selects preferred bidder for Central Track Alliance renewals contract

BRITISH infrastructure manager Network Rail has selected a consortium of Balfour Beatty, TSO and SNC Lavalin’s Atkins subsidiary as preferred bidder for a £1.5bn 10-year infrastructure renewal contract on NR’s London North West, London North East, and East Midlands routes.

The Central Track Alliance contract covers the development, design and delivery of track and crossings renewals as well as associated overhead lines and signalling infrastructure. The initial contract, which will be awarded in the second quarter of 2019, will run for five years with an optional five-year extension. Work is expected to start by the end of the year.

Balfour Beatty says the alliance will deploy “innovative working methods” including a digital management platform incorporating “mechanised processes and digital solutions” to realise efficiencies and create more reliable railway infrastructure.

Balfour Beatty holds an 80% share in the consortium with TSO and Atkins each holding 10% stakes.

NR says its new geographically-focused alliance model will promote greater collaboration between the infrastructure manager and its partners while focusing attention on specific regional infrastructure needs.

The Central Track Alliance contract is the third and final regional renewal agreement. Babcock, Arup and Arcadis were announced as preferred bidders for Scotland, and Colas Rail and Aecom was selected for the South contract in January.
