RAIL Baltica Estonia signed a €34.2m contract on January 5 with the Trev-2 Grupp and AllSpark for the construction of the first section of high-speed railway in Estonia. The European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility will provide 85% of the funding.

Construction is expected to start this spring, with completion scheduled for mid-2027. The new section will be 4.8km long and will run from the east side of the new Tallinn Ülemiste station to the intersection with Lagedi Road in Soodevahes. The section also includes the partial construction of the embankment for Ülemiste station rail yard and the partial construction of the railway element of a new car loading terminal.

“Today will undoubtedly be recorded in Rail Baltica history as one of the most significant days because, with the signatures today, we have finally reached the point that marks the beginning of main line construction,” says Mr Anvar Salomets, CEO of Rail Baltic Estonia. “Additionally, we have already announced the remaining mainline construction tenders for the Harju County area.

With the realisation of upcoming construction tenders announced at the end of 2023, work can begin soon on more than a third of Rail Baltica’s high-speed main line in Estonia.

Rail Baltica will be an 870km, standard-gauge, electrified, double-track railway with a design speed of 249km/h linking Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and the European standard-gauge network in Poland. The railway will be equipped with ERTMS.
