ITALIAN Rail Network (RFI) has issued tenders worth a total of €390m to undertake improvements to stations across Italy.

Divided into 10 lots, the works are part of the Italian infrastructure manager’s  wider Integrated Station Plan (PIS) that includes refurbishment projects at more than 600 stations across Italy. Contracts worth around €1.2bn have been awarded under the programme since it began in 2022.

Work includes the providing step-free access, improvements to underpasses, the addition of new passenger lifts, and enhancing station décor. It will also involve adapting or building new passenger shelters and raising or repaving of platforms to meet the latest European standards. There are also plans to introduce wayfinding systems for visually-impaired passengers.

The stations that will be upgraded under PIS serve handle over 90% of passenger traffic and include small and medium-sized stations deemed as strategically important, as well as major hubs.
