Strabag Switzerland was awarded a public tender in 2015 for the construction of 1.7km of double track between Zug Oerwil and Walchwil, as well as rehabilitation works along the Zug - Arth-Goldau line.

Due to judicial proceedings, the start of work was delayed by two-and-a-half years. Before the signing of the contract in the autumn of 2018, Strabag submitted further requests which were rejected by SBB. At the end of 2018 a declaration of renunciation was agreed.

To keep the project on schedule, SBB entered into talks with the Arge Zugo consortium, which had ranked second in the initial public tender.

Preliminary work is now due to start in March, with the main work being undertaken between July and the end of 2020, during which time the Zug Oberwil - Arth-Goldau line will be closed.

During this period, trains will be diverted or replaced by an enhanced bus service.
