"There were some technical glitches with the prototype, which are being looked into, but we will be rolling out WDG5 for operations soon," DLW's Mr Birendra Kumar told IRJ. The WDG5 is described as the most powerful diesel locomotive ever to take to the tracks in India. It has a tractive effort of 560kN and a maximum speed of 105km/h. It is also the first Indian locomotive to incorporate UIC and AAR crashworthiness features.
India’s ‘most powerful’ diesel ready soon:
The first 4.1MW diesel freight locomotive jointly designed by Indian Railways' Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) in Varanasi, EMD, and India's Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) will be completed soon.
