The $US 3 billion light rail network is a central element of Abu
Dhabi's ambitious Surface Transport Master Plan, which also envisages
the construction of a 130km metro network by 2030.
The initial
42.5km section of the metro from Abu Dhabi International Airport to
Capital City, Saadiyat and Reem is due to open in 2015. Around 19km of
the line will be in bored tunnel, with 16.2km in cut-and-cover tunnel,
4.9km on viaduct and 2.1km at grade.
Abu Dhabi's population is
expected to increase from 900,000 to 3.2 million by 2030, and the
existing road network is expected to reach capacity in 2015.
