This line forms part of a coastal high-speed railway. The northern sections from Fuzhou to Wenzhou and Ningbo opened in September. The final southern section from Fuzhou to Shenzhen and Guangzhou is under construction.
The ceremony also marked the start of work on several new lines in Fujian province, which plans to expand its rail network from 1624km in 2008 to 6000km by 2015 at an estimated cost of Yuan 350 billion ($US 51.2 billion). One of the most important of these projects is the 806km 250km/h line from Fuzhou to Hefei. This Yuan 105.8 billion scheme will take four and a half years to complete.
