"Competition is healthy: it creates more dynamics," says Schmidt. "There are not enough seats to accommodate the demand, and the rails have the capacity for more trains. There is no good explanation for not letting more trains run."
Arriva, the newly acquired subsidiary of German Rail (DB) which already operates some local services on Jutland, says such a service could be very profitable even by offering fares about 30% lower than those currently charged by DSB.
Danish transport minister calls for competition
DENMARK's transport minister, Mr Hans Christian Schmidt, says he would like to see another passenger operator introduce a passenger service on the Copenhagen - Aalborg main line in competition with incumbent Danish State Railways (DSB). He envisages a new operator running one or two trains per hour on the 480km route. This would double the current frequency provided by DSB.
