The Ceneri base tunnel will run between Vigana (near
Camorino) and Vezia (near Lugano) and is due to open at the end of
2019, two years after the Gotthard base tunnel comes into operation.
Drilling of the twin-bore tunnel will be carried out by traditional
methods.

DRILLING work has commenced on the 15.4km Ceneri base tunnel, which is on the south ramp of the Gotthard base tunnel and part of the same project. The formal start was marked by a first detonation at the midway point of Sigirino, where an access tunnel has already been excavated.
