The loan will be used to support the renewal of KTT's wagon fleet by purchasing more than 3000 wagons as well as promote a reassessment of the railway's regulatory set-up. This includes establishing an independent regulatory body which will facilitate the transition to a more efficient and competitive railway operation.

The eight-year loan will be divided into two equal parts and distributed in US dollars and Tenge in equal proportions. The EBRD is the second largest financial investor in Kazakhstan contributing over €2.8 billion to over 130 projects in various sectors of the Kazakh economy.
