The trains were ordered at the end of 2006 under a Euros 190 million contract awarded by VR and Junakalusto, an organisation owned by the city of Helsinki and the neighbouring towns of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen. They will be used in the Helsinki area, southern Finland, and the rail link being built to Helsinki airport.

COMMUTERS in the Finnish capital have started to ride in the first of 32 Flirt emus supplied by Stadler, Switzerland. The trains have thicker insulation, extra heating near the doors, triple glazing and a heat recovery system to cope with the Finnish winter where temperatures can plummet to -40°C.
