Construction of the Yuan 5.1 billion ($US 772 million) line started in December 2008. It is expected to carry 15 million tonnes of freight a year. A further 8000km of new railway is to be built in the region during the next 10 years.
New line opens in northwestern China
FREIGHT trains have started running on a new 488km line in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region of northwest China. The line is an extension of the Turpan - Korla - Kashi railway and runs southeast to Hotan. Passenger services will be inaugurated in June 2011.
