The six-axle, 1.8 MW horsepower locomotives are being manufactured by GE Transportation South America in Brazil and have been designed to suit Nigeria's axle loads and clearances after GE performed an extensive analysis of Nigeria's railway network, haulage requirements and traffic patterns. As part of its contract with NRC, GE will supply spare parts for the locomotives and also train NRC staff in effective maintenance of the engines and their operations at its Brazilian facilities.
