The consortium beat the Grupo Italiano Metro de Panama consortium, which comprises construction companies Impreglio, Astaldi and Ghella, together with AnsaldoBreda. The project consists of constructing a 14km north-south line from Los Andes to Avenida Fernandez de Cordoba to May 5, terminating at the transport hub in Albrook.
With 7km of the line underground and the remaining 6.3km on viaducts, the line will serve 16 stations, 11 of which are underground. Construction will begin in January 2011.
