The new £600 million Birmingham Gateway station will double passenger capacity by having a concourse three-and-a-half times larger than the existing one, additional escalators and lift to the platforms, and better links within and into the station. The existing station was designed for 60,000 passengers a day but is used by 140,000 daily.
Plans for new Birmingham station advance
NETWORK Rail (NR), Britain's infrastructure manager, has submitted plans to Birmingham City Council to rebuild New Street, the city's main station. This follows a public exhibition of the plans which were seen by more than 2000 people. More than 600 questionnaires were returned with 91% saying the design was an improvement over the existing station.
