UKRANIAN Railways (UZ) has signed a contract with Transmashholding and Lugansk Diesel Locomotive Plant, Ukraine, for the supply of 292 2EL4 electric locomotives, in a deal estimated to be worth up to $US 1.5bn. The locomotives will be delivered between 2012 and 2014, and Lugansk says it will be able to deliver up to 100 2EL4s per year to UZ.

The 6.2MW two-section dc locomotive was developed jointly by Lugansk
and Transmashholding subsidiary Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive
Plant. Two prototype locomotives were delivered to UZ in 2009.
The contract, which has been awarded as part of UZ's rolling stock renewal plan, includes component supply and maintenance.
