The four-year contract includes both preventive and corrective maintenance with the objective of reducing operational failures and disruption to train services. Thales will also carry out predictive maintenance to further optimise availability.

The contract covers electronic interlockings; the automatic train protection and driving assistance systems within Spain’s Asfa conventional signalling system as well as LZB and ERTMS; and object, hot box and lateral wind detectors.

Thales has maintained the signalling equipment on the Madrid - Seville line since it first opened in 1992, adding the Toledo branch in 2005, and the Cordoba - Malaga line when it opened in 2007.

Thales also has a 20-year contract to maintain traffic control systems on the 120km Antequera - Granada high-speed line which opened last year and a 25-year contract for the La Encina - Valencia section of the Mediterranean corridor.
