Spain's development minister Mrs Ana Pastor presided over a signing ceremony in Madrid today between EIB vice-president Mrs Magdalena Álvarez Arza and Adif CEO Mr Enrique Verdeguer.

The 180.5km line will link the Basque Country's three capital cities and will comprise two lines Vitoria – Bilbao (90.8km) and Bergara – San Sebastián – Irun (89.7km). The project includes construction of links to the conventional network, and access to Vitoria, Bilbao-Obando and San Sebastián-Atotxa stations. Due to the mountainous terrain around 70% of the line will be built in tunnels, and the minimum curve radius will be 3100m, with a maximum line speed of 250km/h.

The project is due to be completed in 2017.
