Adif released its 10-year network statement for the “network of general interest” (RFIG) in April, which proposed creating three high-speed packages in response to the liberalisation of the market following the introduction of the European Union’s Fourth Railway Package.

The Renfe board of directors approved the request for Package A, which has the greatest number of paths, on October 22, which must now be sent to Adif by October 31. This includes 32 paths for both the Madrid - Barcelona and Madrid - Valencia/Alicante routes, and 40 paths for the Madrid - Seville/Malaga/Granada route.

All 104 paths would operate from December 14 2020. Renfe says the additional capacity would optimise its fleet and offer better services for passengers.
