FRENCH Rail Network (RFF) has awarded a Euros 80m contract to a consortium led by Alstom to upgrade the so-called Alpine Arc South line. Preliminary studies for the scheme started last month, while work on the nine-month project is expected to start in January 2013.
The project involves electrifying at 25kV ac the 80km line between Valence and Moirans, constructing a link to Valence TGV station, and increasing the loading gauge in three tunnels. This will plug a gap in the electrified network and allow TGVs to operate directly from Grenoble to destinations in southern France.
The other members of the consortium are Colas Rail, Spie Batignolles TPCI and Nouvetra, together with Setec Ferroviaire which will be responsible for project management.
