ROME public transport operator Atac has signed a framework contract worth €457m with CAF for the supply of up to 121 bi-directional Urbos LRVs.

The contract includes a firm order for 40 LRVs plus an option for an additional 81, divided into tranches of 66 and 15 vehicles. The new LRVs will replace the remaining 70-year-old Stanga articulated trams, 40 of which are still part of Rome’s operational fleet. They will be deployed on both existing and new light rail lines planned for the city.

The five-section, bi-directional Urbos LRVs will be equipped with a battery-supercapacitor system to enable operation on sections without catenary. The 33.5m-long vehicles can accommodate up to 215 passengers.

CAF overcame competing bids for the contract from Hitachi Rail, Stadler and Škoda. Delivery is expected within 18 months of the contract signing.

Several of the Stanga fleet will be renovated and preserved for use on Rome’s heritage Archeotram line, which serves many of the city’s historical sites.

The LRVs for Rome will be based on CAF's Urbos model.
