The new line will have 15 stations and will serve the new Coface Arena football stadium en route to Lerchenberg, which is the location of the headquarters of national television channel ZDF.
The total budget for the project is €84m, with €44m coming from the federal government and €9m from the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. The remaining €31m will be funded by the city-owned Stadtwerke Mainz, the parent company of MVG. Construction should begin next year and the line is due to open by December 2016.
