The first section of the so-called South Chord LRT to be built will be Line 2, which will run for 27km between Domodedovo Airport and the southern terminus of Metro Line 2 at Krasnogvardeyskaya. Detailed design is now underway, and construction is due to begin in early 2014 with the opening planned for late 2015.

The core of the network will be the 102km Line 1 from Ramenskoe to Domodedovo, Shcherbinka, Butovo, and Skolkovo, which will interchange with suburban rail and metro stations on the southern periphery of the city. In addition, branches will run to Kutuzovskaya (Line 2a) Lytkarino and Lyubertsky (Line 3), and Barybino (Line 4).

According to DTD, the project has the preliminary support of the federal Ministry of Transport and will be implemented as a public-private partnership including the government of the Moscow region, DTD, and a major European manufacturer.
