SWEDISH public transport operator Västtrafik has awarded Škoda Group a €80m contract to refurbish the fleet of 80 type M31 trams currently in service in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Work is due to start later this year at the Škoda plant in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and is due for completion in 2027.

The programme includes installing a new door system and ramp for disabled access, fitting a new braking system, and providing air-conditioning for the driver’s cab.

Electrical equipment will be refurbished, while the interiors will receive new lighting and improved heating.

Then operated by Ekova Electric, the Ostrava plant carried out similar work on 79 M31 trams between 2011 and 2017, including modifications to the car bodies and replacement of electrical equipment.

Ekova Electric was acquired by Škoda Group in 2021 and is now known as Škoda Ekova.
