The report, commissioned by the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the Nuremberg Transport Association (ZVGN) and the administrative districts of Schwäbisch Hall and Ansbach, evaluated several variants of an S-Bahn extension.

The S4 extension, combined with existing regional express services, was the preferred option to improve the frequency of services to Ansbach, Leutershausen-Wiedersbach, Dombühl, Schnelldorf and Crailsheim stations.

The states will now explore financial avenues for the project and agree a schedule with German Rail (DB).

“By linking the S-Bahn to Crailsheim, there is the possibility of creating an additional connection to Nuremberg that is free of transfers, thus taking the next step in attractive and cross-border local transport in Franconia,” says Baden-Württemberg minister of transport, Mr Winfried Hermann. “Together with the Free State of Bavaria, the counties and the ZVGN, we are committed to this project and its rapid implementation.”
