Based on Alstom's Métropolis range, the new metro train is currently undergoing trials at the Valenciennes site and the Valenciennes Rail Testing Centre. The City of Amsterdam placed a €200m order for 23 metro trains in February 2010 with the first units due to be delivered in February to enter service in autumn 2012.
The 116m-long trains will offer a 50% increase in capacity from the network's existing rolling stock. The interior is designed to allow more natural lighting as well as maximise space by providing wide seats and gangways.
Alstom's plants in Le Creusot and Villeurbanne, France, Charleroi, Belgium, Sesto, Italy, Katowice, Poland, and Montreal, Canada, have contributed to the project.
