VN Express reports Line 1 could be extended from 14km to 34km, with an extension to Xuan Mai Town, southwest of Hanoi. Hanoi is also considering extending Line 2 with an additional 9km section from Noi Bai Airport to Soc Son.

The planned Line 3, which is set to run 12.5km from Nhon in the western district of Nam Tu Liem to the Hanoi Railway Station, could also be extended 30km to Son Tay.

Construction on lines 1 and 2 began in 2011, with completion set for 2013, but the project has since faced numerous setbacks. The lines eventually entered the testing phase in March.

Last month, VN Express reported that deputy prime minister, Mr Trinh Dinh Dung, called for the network to open by the end of the year, although some safety tests are still to be carried out.
