THE state of São Paulo has issued an international tender seeking established train manufacturers to supply 44 trains to operate on the São Paulo Metro.

The six-car trains will be funded by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and a contract price of Reais 3.6bn (€672m) has been set. The deadline for bids is March 20 and a decision will be made solely on price. The first train must be delivered 21 months after contract signing, with all 44 trains due to be delivered within five years, equating to delivery of between one and two trains per month.

The new trains will operate on the São Paulo Metro’s extended Line 2/Green and will provide extra capacity for Line 1/Blue and Line 3/Red.

The São Paulo Metropolitan Transport Secretariat (STM) says that the new trains will boost passenger capacity and reduce journey times. They will be equipped with features to increase efficiency, safety and passenger comfort, including cars designed for passengers with reduced mobility.

In line with São Paulo’s sustainability policy, the trains will be built and operated with minimal environmental impact.
