The Rs 83.8bn two-line first phase of the Agra metro network will connect the city centre with tourist destinations including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the tomb of Akbar the Great at Sikandra. It will also serve Agra Cantt and Raja Ki Mandi main line stations.

The network will comprises a 14km line from Taj East Gate to Sikandra with 13 stations (six elevated and seven underground) and a 15.4km elevated line from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar, which will serve 14 stations. Construction will take five years to complete.

Both projects will be financed jointly by the Indian government and the state of Uttar Pradesh on an equal equity basis and partly through soft loans from international institutions. Uttar Pradesh has already allocated Rs 175m to each project as part of its 2019-2020 budget.

Approval of the two projects came just three days after the cabinet gave the go-ahead for the second phase of the metro network Ahmedabad.
