The memorandum on cooperation was signed by Russian Railways (RZD) director general and chairman, Mr Oleg Belozyorov, Turkish State Railways (TCDD) director general, Mr Ali Ihsan Uygun, and Azerbaijan Railways (ADY) chairman, Mr Javid Gurbanov.

Under the agreement, the parties will examine the feasibility of constructing a second 1520mm-gauge track on the 76km section of the Baku - Tbilisi - Kars (BTK) railway between Akhalkalaki, Georgia and Kars, Turkey, where a terminal and logistics centre would also be built.

The memorandum also covers joint actions to facilitate growth in rail traffic on the BTK corridor, including the creation of economically-sound freight tariffs.
