The 21km Panama Metro Line 2 runs northeast from an interchange with Line 1 at San Miguelito to San Antonio, Hospital del Este and Nuevo Tocumen, serving 16 stations.

The line has a design capacity of 40,000 passengers/direction/hour and is forecast to carry 16,000 passengers/direction/hour in the initial phase of operation.

Construction began on the $US 2.13bn project in October 2015 and civil works were carried out by the Consorcio Linea 2 consortium of Odebrecht Infrastructure, Brazil, and FCC, Spain, under a $US 1.86bn contract awarded by Panama Metro in 2014.

The line was equipped by the Grupo de Empresas consortium, which includes Alstom, CIM, Sofratesa, Thales, and TSO. Alstom’s share of the contract is worth around $US 330m and includes a fleet of 21 five-car Metropolis trains, Urbalis CBTC, and Hesop reversible substations.
