The governor of the State of São Paulo, Mr João Doria, announced on June 3 the immediate resumption of final preparations for an 8.3km extension of metro Line 2-Green with eight stations from Vila Prudente north to Penha. Civil works contracts were awarded in 2014, but then suspended due to budget cuts. The goal is to start construction in the first quarter of 2020.

São Paulo state will invest Reais 5.5bn ($US 1.4bn) in the civil works while São Paulo Metro will prepare a tender for the acquisition of 22 trains, power supply systems, signalling and train control, telecommunications, and platform screen doors.

The extension is expected to attract an additional 377,000 riders per day to Line 2-Green boosting overall daily ridership on the line to 1.1 million passengers. When complete, Line 2-Green will be 23km long with 22 stations.

Airport monorail

São Paulo state and the Ministry of Infrastructure, in partnership with the administrator of Guarulhos International Airport, have agreed to build a 2.6km monorail to connect the airport station on Line 13-Jade, operated by the Paulista Metropolitan Trains (CPTM), and the airport’s three passenger terminals. Passengers are currently transported by bus between the station and the terminals.

The Guarulhos Airport concessionaire will fund the Reais 175m project and work will begin in September, with completion scheduled for May 2021.

The monorail will have a capacity of 2000 passengers per hour per direction with an end-to-end journey time of six minutes.

Eight purpose-built EMUs with luggage racks will enter service on Line 13-Jade in the second half of 2019. The trains are being manufactured by the Temoinsa-Sifang consortium under a Reais 316.7m contract.

Line 17-Gold

São Paulo Metro has launched a tender to appoint a contractor to complete the civil works for the Line 17-Gold monorail project, construction of which started in 2012. Phase 1 will be 7.7km long with eight stations running from Congonhas Airport and Jardim Aeroporto west to Campo Belo and Morumbi. The line is expected to carry 85,000 passengers per day.

São Paulo Metro issued a Reais 88m fine to the CMI - Integration Monorail Consortium for non-compliance with the planned construction schedule. The consortium includes train builder Scomi Engineering, Malaysia, which filed for bankruptcy. Scomi was also supposed to supply trains for the Line 18-Bronze monorail project.

Tenders for the purchase of systems and rolling stock for Line 17-Gold are expected to be launched this month.
