The S200s will be assembled at Siemens' Sacramento plant in Cailfornia and are due to be delivered to Calgary between August 2015 and December 2016. The new fleet will support the introduction of four-car operation in the city and may also allow the withdrawal of the oldest U2 vehicles, which date from the opening of the system in 1981.

However, it is possible that many of these vehicles will remain in service much longer due to increasing ridership, which cannot be fully addressed by the new vehicles, even though Calgary Transit has increased its order from the 50 vehicles it originally planned to purchase.

Calgary Transit says it expects to increase its LRV fleet from 192 vehicles to 390 over the next 30 years as the network continues to expand.
