The power packs feature the 6H R85L engine and meet EU Stage IIIB emissions standards. They will have an output of 390kW and contain a built-in selective catalytic reduction unit which will reduce the amount of nitrogen oxide produced. The Series 1800 engines feature high power and low level consumption.

Arriva Rail North, a subsidiary of German Rail (DB), will operate a fleet of 55 class 195 DMUs, comprising 25 two-car and 30 three-car trains. The fleet will be used on the future Northern Connect network which will link Liverpool, Chester, Barrow-in-Furness, Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leeds, Newcastle, and Hull.

The trains will have a maximum commercial speed of 160 km/h.
