The €221m order was placed in May 2008 with deliveries initially scheduled for between April and August 2010. However, problems with approval delayed introduction of the trains by nearly two years. Around half of the trains have now been built with the remainder set to be built and delivered during 2012.

The X55 trains will also displace X2000 high-speed trains, which like the X40, will be transferred to other routes including Stockholm - Malmo/ Gothenburg where extra capacity is required.
