RZD has declared December 17 high-speed day to mark the launch of Sapsan services in 2009. The trains are designed to operate at a maximum of 250km/h and currently complete the 650km Moscow - St Petersburg journey in 3h 45min. There is also one return trip a day between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod.
RZD orders more Sapsan high-speed trains from Siemens
RUSSIAN Railways (RZD) has awarded a Euros 600m contract to Siemens to supply a second batch of eight 10-car Sapsan high-speed trains and to maintain them for 30 years. Delivery of the Velaro Rus trains, which will be built in Krefeld, Germany, will start in January 2014 and enable RZD to expand services on the Moscow - St Petersburg line where most of the existing trains operate.
