The refurbishment will extend the life of the fleet for another 20 years, or 5.4 million km. The fleet comprises 152 second-class, 58 first-class and 12 dining cars, and the work involved the renewal of interiors including the walls, floors, ceilings and seats, and the installation of ski and bicycle racks. In addition closed-system toilets have been installed and facilities for disabled passengers improved. The cars are equipped with 3G WiFi, which can be upgraded to 4G in the future, and electric power sockets.
Insulation has also been improved and the heating and air-conditioning systems made more efficient to reduce energy consumption. As a result, SBB expects to cut consumption by about 6GWh per year.
