The project will take two years to complete and involves the installation of ETCS Level 1 using Invensys Rail's Futur system and Westrace MkII modular signalling. The objective is to increase capacity and improve safety.

The revitalisation programme was cut back last year and now entails the electrification of two lines, resignalling, and the purchase of a fleet of 22 three-car emus from Bombardier.
